Goddess Parvati created Lord Ganesha to guard the entrance while she takes a bath. Lord Shiva returned home at the same time but was not allowed to enter the house. Ganesha lost his head to Shiva's divine fury but did not break the trust of his creator and breach his duty.
Soon realizing what he had done, Shiva searched for the first being he could find, an elephant, and placed that head on the boy, naming him “Ganesha” or “lord of the elephants.” He then decreed that he would be the remover of obstacles, always worshipped first in any ritual.
